What speeds are required for media streaming?

Speeds required for media streaming vary by service but below is a list of the speeds required to stream Films, TV shows or Live TV.

Netflix & Amazon Prime Video requires the following minimum speeds for streaming:

  • Standard Definition: 1Mbps
  • High Definition: 5Mbps
  • 4k/UHD: 15Mbps

The BBC recommends the following speeds for BBC Iplayer

  • Standard Definition: 1.5Mbps
  • High Definition: 5Mbps
  • 4k/UHD: 24Mbps

ITV Hub does not have defined speed recommendations but a speed of around 0.8Mbps to 3Mbps to stream and only stream in SD.

To stream Disney+ you require the following speeds:

  • High Definition: 5Mbps
  • 4k/UHD: 25Mbps

Sky Go Does not explicitly state a recommended speed however consensus from tech review websites suggest around 10Mbps is required as a minimum to stream content.

Apple TV+ requires the following speeds:

  • High Definition: 5Mbps
  • 4k/UHD: 25Mbps

These figures are all minimum speed requirements and many websites suggest around 25% more would be recommended for buffer free streaming.
